Today I am announcing my candidacy for the upcoming Moreton Bay Regional Council for representing Division 2, the election being on 28th March 2020.
I believe I have the experience, the integrity and knowledge of being truly representative of the community I live in at Burpengary East. I have been partnered for 39 years to Greg, mother of 2 children and grandmother of 4.
I am a Midwife, Registered Nurse who has worked in various roles in midwifery, Intensive Care and Community nursing. The past 10 years I have been a FIFO/DIDO midwife/RN working Emerald, Kingaroy and residing for 4 years in Tamworth. I am now working in a tertiary maternity hospital in Brisbane and Child Health nurse at Embrace Life North Lakes.
We settled in Burpengary East and I have been a long-term resident of the area, since 1981. I have been active within the community. I am an independent candidate with no funding or assistance from any source.
I have been on the Queensland Nurses and Midwives Union/Australian Nurses Federation executive and Council member 2003 – 2014. I have completed the mandatory Company Director Course as legislated for all Australian Unions. I had been a very active member of the Redcliffe Hospital branch.
I will briefly outline my community experience as below.
Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre 1990 – 2009 Life member awarded 2009.
My role as the inaugural secretary was immense in participating and developing strategic plans for the community. DBNHC, a multi-purpose centre incorporating Child Health, Family Support and Community Development and volunteer workers required multi-disciplinary approach liaising with Queensland Health, Family Services and volunteer committee members.
Involved from inception to Incorporation including developing mission statement, policy and procedures, building and employment of staff. Proper governance and support including legislated responsibilities of an incorporated body. Developing the many community projects and fund-raising activities.
Social justice principles and community development projects predominate the work of this Centre- to support the community, to return pride and self-direction back into the people thereby supporting the community and its people.
Kamiza Judo Club Inc. Deception Bay 1997 – 2000 Treasurer and Secretary. Supporting club players and activities.
Deception Bay, Burpengary, Narangba Welfare Council Inc. (D.B.B.N.W.C.) pre-curser to the Neighbourhood Centre 1989 – 1992 Treasurer and Volunteer (Community Representative). Activities included-
• Job and Employment Training (JET) sponsored by CES and DSS April 1992 Tutor
o Planned and conducted course for Women’s re-entry into the workplace
o Assisted in the integration back to the workforce
- Job Search Training, D.B.B.N.W.C. 1991 – 1992 Job Search Training Tutor
o Conducted 5 x 20-hour courses, for the long term unemployed of all ages, and literacy levels on behalf of the CES
o Included preparation, grooming, resume building, interview, and telephone techniques.
- Women’s Shelter, run by D.B.B.N.W.C. 1989 – 1992 Volunteer Women’s Shelter
o Helped to run, supervise, and support a non-funded Women’s Shelter
o Referred clients to other services when required.
o Provided basic counselling.
- Near North Housing sponsored by D.B.B.N.W.C. 1989 – 1992 Volunteer Housing Referral Worker
o Provided tenancy advice, information and referred clients to other agencies. Attended training from Tenants Union.
o Assisted in the setting up and incorporation of Near North Housing as funded by the Rental Bond Authority
- Life and Workskills Development Courses, D.B.B.N.W.C. 1989 – 1992 Tutor/trainer
o Conducted 6-week courses for the unemployed youth.
o Camp Supervisor and friend.
o Provide basic counselling.
o Tutoring in OH & S, personal health, resume building.
