I had a great time being a volunteer on the Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre table this morning at the Under 5’s Day. The energetic Dan (CDW) had built an amazing collection where children could scoop dirt and repot either a pansy or a tomato plant to take home.
Bay is special for me. I looked across the room and saw so many happy groups
servicing and supporting the broad community.
Take me back to 1981 and until 1993 as a young woman and a mother there was no to minimal support to families available. Everything was a struggle.
From grassroots Kevin and I led an amazing group of trail blazers who had a vision, The Welfare Council, and with the support of newly elected Member Ken Hayward. This event today has validated that community led from within can make a difference to those that live there.
inaugural secretary of the NHC we did an amazing amount of work. Establishing
60 and Better, community youth programs and then other groups came into the
Networking and co-ordinating community programs to create an entirely different community it was in the 80’s.
Trail blazing required vision and courage. Working within the community and various State Departments, maintaining standards and meeting auditing requirements was part of the governance of the Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre.
I was an Amity Midwife, based at Redcliffe who worked out of the Deception Bay Shopping Centre – another trail blazing effort ahead of its time but that is another story.
Thank you, Deception Bay the future is bright. We did make a difference.
